Sevilla fan who called Vinicius a "monkey" faces one year and nine months in prison

On April 29, the Seville Provincial Court will try the Sevilla fan who, according to the Public Prosecutor's Office, insulted Vinicius by calling him a "monkey" on several occasions, as well as making "the gestures of primates" and shouting "uh, uh, uh" in the match between the two teams at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium in 2023. The Public Prosecutor's Office will ask for one year and nine months for a crime against moral integrity.

The prosecutor's office said: "He addressed him (Vinicius) repeatedly insulting him with evident contempt for the black color of the player's skin, uttering against him shouts and gestures of contempt of a racist nature towards his person generating feelings of frustration, shame and humiliation, with the consequent impairment of his intrinsic dignity."

In addition, it adds that these insults and gestures occurred in front of "a large television, radio and media audience". LaLiga and Real Madrid have appeared in this case. For its part, Sevilla expelled the fan at that time, as soon as the facts were known.

The prison sentence of one year and nine months could be increased to a two-year ban from stadiums.

If the conviction is confirmed, it would be the ninth for racism in the top category of Spanish football. Vinicius has been involved in three of them, but he is not the only one. Chukwueze was another player affected by these racist incidents, on which LaLiga is focusing.
