Real Madrid fans can see a ray of light after the darkness brought by the tough 4-2 defeat to Benfica: the Merengue's only two goals are already historic.
The scorer of both goals, Kylian Mbappé, became Real Madrid's all-time leading scorer in the Champions League group stage, surpassing his childhood idol, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Mbappé surpasses CR7
Kylian scored the first goal with a header in the 29th minute, while the second came in the 58th minute after an assist from Arda Guler. Thus, the double he scored on Wednesday, January 28, at the Estadio Da Luz brought his total to 13 goals, surpassing CR7's 11 goals.
This record had been held by the Portuguese player for almost a decade after facing PSG, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Malmö FF in the 2015/16 season. However, while CR7 achieved it in six games, Kylian needed the same number to tie it, but one more to surpass it.
Despite this great achievement, the story may not end here. With his 13 goals and two extra games, Mbappé could go for another record held by the Portuguese captain and surpass the highest number of goals in a single campaign: 17 goals scored in the 2013/14 season, the highest number for a player in a single edition of the Champions League.

However, his efforts were not enough to stop Mourinho's Benfica, and Real Madrid will have to play in the playoffs instead of advancing directly to the round of 16.
True to form, Kylian did not hide his frustration after the heavy defeat, especially after Benfica's last goal, which was sealed by goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin: "We played terribly... Then, already losing 3-2, the fourth goal doesn't change anything, it's a bit embarrassing, but it doesn't change anything... The defeat is deserved," he said after the match.
The club will find out tomorrow, Friday, January 30, who they will face in the Champions League round of 16: Bodø/Glimt or Benfica. They will play the first leg away on February 17 or 18, while the second leg will be at the Bernabéu on February 24 or 25.
Now, they are preparing for the LaLiga match against Real Sociedad on Saturday, February 14, at home. In light of this, Kylian sent a message to the fans:
"I ask the Bernabéu to come out and support the team. We are not out of the competition and we are on a good run in LaLiga. If the Bernabéu is with us, we will have a good game."
