With a spectacular brace from Julian Alvarez, the Argentinean shone as the star of the match and has scored five goals in the last two games. The 5-2 win for the Colchoneros sets a precedent for thrashings in Madrid derbies and it is time to look back at the team's last thrashings.

• The first thrashing was in 1950, when Atletico thrashed their opponents 5-1 at home. The goals on that day were scored by Juncosa, Mujica and Escudero.
• The next thrashing came in 1987, at the Santiago Bernabeu, where the Colchoneros won 4-0 with goals from Julio Salinas, Futre and Lopez Ufarte.
• The last time Atletico Madrid beat Real Madrid by four goals in an official match was with Cholo Simeone on the bench. In 2015, Atletico won 4-0 against Real Madrid at the Estadio Vicente Calderon with goals from Tiago, Saul, Griezmann and Mandzukic.

Julian Alvarez is on the rise

A week ago, the atmosphere at Atletico Madrid was one of distrust, doubt and criticism of their players. Cholo was the main target for a poor start to the season and above all, for taking Julian Alvarez off at important moments.

The criticism faded away with Alvarez's hat-trick against Rayo Vallecano and especially today with the Argentine's brace against Real Madrid.
