November 16 will be remembered in the history books, as the NFL played a game in Spain for the very first time, and of course, it had to be at the renovated and historic Santiago Bernabéu, home of Real Madrid. The matchup featured the Miami Dolphins and the Washington Commanders, with the Florida team taking the win in overtime, 16-13.
Dolphins and Commanders fans experience a big NFL fiesta in Madrid
Despite both teams being disappointments this season-especially considering the talent on their rosters-the game was decided in overtime with a 29-yard field goal by Riley Patterson, set up by a Jack Jones interception right at the start of the extra period. Jones even celebrated the interception by doing Cristiano Ronaldo's famous "SIU" celebration.
The Santiago Bernabéu turf was lit up by Dolphins running back De'Von Achane, who rushed for 120 yards on 21 carries and totaled 165 yards overall. With this win, the Dolphins secured back-to-back victories and maintain a faint hope-though they still need a miracle-to reach the 2025 playoffs, which is practically impossible.

Different personalities were present at the Santiago Bernabéu
Without a doubt, the date is historic as the first regular-season NFL game ever held in Spain. Naturally, the stadium was filled with notable figures, but one of the most viral moments was the greeting between two legendary goalkeepers. Iker Casillas, Spain's 2010 World Cup champion, shared a warm embrace with Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, who is seeking to play in his sixth World Cup.

The video of their hug quickly trended on social media. Both Casillas and Ochoa have maintained a good relationship over the years. Interestingly, the Spanish goalkeeper was announced earlier in the week by the Mexican network TV Azteca as one of their commentators for the upcoming World Cup. Casillas' ties to Mexico run deep.
The Dolphins-Commanders game in Madrid was a world-class event. It wasn't just Casillas and Ochoa in attendance-many notable personalities showed up. Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez was there and met with Zinedine Zidane, the coach who won three Champions League titles as manager of the club. There were also artists performing during halftime: Daddy Yankee and Bizarrap.

This was the seventh and final international NFL game of the season. Next year will include the league's return to Mexico City. There's no doubt that the NFL is setting the standard for how to globalize a sport-slowly breaking more barriers and reaffirming itself as the most spectacular sports league in the world.
